I wanted to put together a collection of mood boards for boy’s nurseries. It can be overwhelming to design a space for a baby boy. There are so many options and styles! A traditional baby blue nursery can look bright and inviting or a neutral palette can be calming and cozy. That’s why I wanted to put together a variety of mood boards to highlight some of my favorite options for a boy’s nursery.
How to Design the Perfect Boy’s Nursery
I hope you enjoy the inspiration from my mood boards in this Blog Post, but I also wanted to give you my tips and tricks for putting together your own boy’s nursery.
- Decide on your color palette
- Pick a “theme” / interests for artwork and decor
- Choose your functional pieces
Decide on Your Color Palette
I usually recommend starting most designs by selecting furnishing and then picking paint colors, but with a nursery I think the color scheme is the most important aspect of the design that should drive all your other decisions. These colors are going to be the first colors your baby sees and their first environment. That’s why I think color palette is essential for nurseries. There are so many color options and palettes that are perfect for babies. However, today, I will be focusing on some of my favorite colors for boy’s nurseries. As you’ll see in my mood boards below, blues, greens, creams and black are a few of my favorites!
Pick a “Theme” / Interests
Picking a theme sounds a bit trivial, but this is a loose theme. I used quotations in my heading because this “theme” isn’t the end-all-be-all of the design. This is just to get you thinking about what kind of artwork and decor that you would like to expose to your newborn. For boys, my favorite themes include animals, sports, cars/trucks and “experiences.” These can be things like the ocean, safari, adventure, or wilderness. I love getting creative with this aspect of the design because it is a great way to add a personal touch of things you enjoy and want your child to explore too!
Choose Your Functional Pieces
This step is less glamorous than the others, but it is an essential step in creating a baby nursery. I’m not a mother yet, but I know that it is important to decide what you need to best take care of your baby. The obvious essentials are a crib, changing table and functional storage. I included this step in my design tips because selecting the right pieces to complement your aesthetic is key to creating a functional and beautiful space for you and your newborn to enjoy. Be sure to think through all the aspects of what will help you in your journey of parenthood. For example, I love the idea of a glider for rocking the baby to sleep. I suggest a super comfy one so that you can relax in the middle of the night when you are gently rocking your baby back to sleep!

Black and Beige Mood Board for Boy’s Nursery
I love the simplicity of this design. The black and beige color scheme is neutral yet inviting. My goal for this design was to create a calming and cozy space, perfect for a growing boy. I added some sports artwork on the wall to add some intrigue. Finally, I finished this one off with a plush football toy and teddy bear to create a soft warm environment of peace and tranquility.
2. Green and Neutral Boy’s Nursery

Green Mood Board for Boy’s Nursery
For this mood board, I wanted to achieve a neutral aesthetic that doesn’t lean into the conventional boy nursery color schemes. Green is one of my favorite colors because it is natural and comes in a wonderful variety of Green shades and hues. One shade of green that I love in particular is Olive. I pairing it with creams and beiges. Because this color scheme is inherently neutral, this is a great design that can be repurposed for baby girl down the road. The pinstripe glider is one of my favorite elements of the design. It’s a comfy place to rock your baby back to sleep and looks great paired with the green, hand-braided rug. I love this color schemed because I find it tranquil and calming.
3. Navy Blue Boy’s Sports Nursery

Navy Sports Mood Board for Boy’s Nursery
I love this design because it takes a different approach on a blue boy’s nursery. The navy blue pairs nicely with the brown tones and is a perfect color for a boy to grow into! The basketball painting, name sign and the pennant add a lovely interesting element to the design without being overbearing. Using the wallpaper as an accent wall is a great way to add texture and dimension to the room. You can also wallpaper the entire nursery for a darker and moodier vibe.
4. Light Blue Coastal Boy’s Nursery

This nursery has soothing hues of light blue that welcome you. I love how this mood board captures the essence of the coast. My focal point of the space is the wave wallpaper. The gentle swells remind me of the ocean’s calming rhythm. I chose the crib as a dark contrast piece. It’s cozy and inviting. I tried to incorporate a variety of shades of blue because it feels like the tranquility of the sea. A light blue and white rug anchors the space. This nursery is a coastal retreat that promises sweet dreams.
